What is the Uchida-Kraepelin psychodiagnostic test (the U-K test)?

Building upon research by German psychiatrist Emil Kraepelin, Japanese psychologist Yuzaburo Uchida developed this test after years of studies of its methodology and validity.

The Uchida-Kraepelin (U-K) test is a summation of a single-digit number, moving to the next line every one minute. It requires only 30 minutes to complete the test with a break in between. The examiner will show a tutorial to participants before starting the exam. The results indicate the examinee’s intelligence and personality from the curve and errors.

  • The examinee is unable to manipulate their test result.
  • It helps the company in term of decision making when they hire a new employee.
  • It creates productivity in the organisation.
  • The personality test is a guide for you to place the right person in the right job.
  • There are no language barriers for the Uchida-Kraepelin (the test tutorial is available in Thai, English, and Japanese).

Case Study

Japan is a world-famous country for many aspects, including human resources. “Made in Japan” is a guarantee of quality, in part because of the Uchida-Kraepelin test. The test is used in Japan’s railway system to prevent accidents caused by the driver. As a result, Japan has the lowest number of train accidents per kilometre.

Employee Characteristics

The results of the Uchida-Kraepelin test reveal the employee’s characteristics and working style. We categorize the examinee into two groups, according to the famous Aesop story “The Tortoise and the Hare”. A hare is a person who is able to perform various tasks with good efficiency. However, they cannot do the same task for a long time. On the other hand, a tortoise is a person who cannot match the job efficiency of a hare, but is good at performing routine tasks. This test can be applied in the recruiting process to help you place the right person in the right job.
